Concept

Through this body of work, I sought to explore the use of the bull as a national symbol of Spain

  • Travel posters (perspective of a tourist…) - foreign artist

  • change of perspective can manipulate interpretation, perception of Spain

  • Speculate the future…

This project took many different forms en route to the final series it is today. Throughout the process, I was very focused on making each piece stylistically different and having a chronological “storyline” through the full series. Eventually, I realized these works were in conversation with each other, requiring a divided set-up that allowed these pieces to interact with their respective sides and in contrast to their opposite. These posters use minimalistic imagery and bold colors to be eye-catching but visually legible to as many viewers as possible. They fulfill the role of a travel poster while also encouraging reflection on what comparisons these posters are making about the identity of the bull and Spain as a whole.

Process

The “original project” was actually not a poster series at all. Upholding Bull is a multimedia sculpture that used comparisons between the treatment of women and bulls in Spain to denounce both in modern-day Spanish society. After realizing there was much more I wanted to explore in the role of the bull symbol and bullfighting in Spain, I decided to pivot my project into a poster series.
